Why Map Is Not Part of Collection
In the Java Collections Framework, many beginners assume Map should extend Collection, but it does not.
This is by design, and the reasons are fundamental to how Maps work.
1. Collection Represents a Group of Individual Elements
The Collection interface models:
- A group of elements
- Each element is a single object (
T) - Operations work on elements one-by-one

List<String>, Set<Integer>, Queue<User>
But a Map stores key/value pairs, not individual elements.
Map<K, V> stores entries like:

5. Iteration Semantics Differ

iterator()
Map CANNOT provide a single iterator.
Map actually has three different views:

- values() → Collection<V>

So Maps have their own iteration model that does not fit Collection’s model.
6. Historical and Design Reason: Avoid Confusion

A Map is fundamentally different from a Collection and combining them caused more confusion than help.
Originally (pre-Java 1.2), Map and Collection were completely separate.
When designers unified the framework, they kept Map separate.
